What is the HVDC Awareness Scheme?
The HVDC Awareness scheme is aimed at everyone in the power industry who needs a basic level of knowledge of HVDC when working adjacent to or directly with HVDC projects or assets. This includes:
- Electrical or mechanical engineers with an AC-power background
- Project managers, planners, or analysts responsible for HVDC-related decisions
- Operations and maintenance supervisors working near HVDC installations
The scheme is best suited to those that have some working experience or technical knowledge of the power industry however this does not need to be electrical or engineering. The scheme assumes a basic understanding of power-system concepts, but no prior HVDC design experience is required.
The scheme covers the application of HVDC within modern power systems, highlighting how this differs from traditional AC transmission. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of HVDC technology, its role in supporting renewable energy integration in the UK, and the global evolution of the HVDC market, including emerging trends in policy. Additionally, it covers the basic characteristics of HVDC technologies and cable systems and the engineering and installation challenges that need to be overcome.
Delivery Model
Training and assessments are delivered face to face by approved EUSR training providers. This ensures that individuals received high quality training and assessments.
The training and assessment is delivered in half a day.
Assessment
The assessment involves a multiple-choice test consisting of 20 questions set by EUSR and marked by the Approved Trainer.
Registration
Registration on EUSR is valid for three years following successful completion of training and assessment on an EUSR approved training programme.
Renewal
To renew an EUSR registration, individuals need to show ongoing compliance with the scheme’s specification. This involves repeating the training programme and undergoing an assessment by an EUSR Approved Provider.
