What is the Smart Metering scheme?
Our Smart Metering scheme is intended for all individuals who carry out electricity and/or gas smart meter installations. The National Skills Academy for Power (NSAP) collaborated with its member employers and major industry stakeholders to develop ‘accreditation’ for smart meter installers. All major energy suppliers support NSAP’s Smart Metering scheme. If you require a CSCS card, click here.
Smart meter installers (whether existing meter installers or new entrants to the Smart Metering industry) undertake appropriate training, development and assessment mapped against the industry approved NSAP National Assessment Specification (NAS) – for both electricity and/or gas.
Delivery Models
| Competency Category | Minimum in Classroom Duration |
| Smart Metering (Electricity): Single Phase Cut-Out | Minimum of 2 weeks |
| Smart Metering (Electricity): Single Phase Multi-rate Meters | Minimum of 2 days* |
| Smart Metering (Electricity): Single Phase off Multi-Phase Cut-Out | Minimum of 3 days* |
| Smart Metering (Electricity): Multi-Phase off Multi-Phase Cut-Out | Minimum of 2 days* |
| Smart Metering (Gas): Low Pressure up to U6 only | Minimum of 5 weeks |
| Smart Metering (Gas): Medium Pressure up to U6 only | Minimum of 1 day |
| Total for dual fuel training (all categories): 8 weeks and 3 days |
* These optional categories take a minimum of 2 or 3 days to deliver. This assumes that providers spend 2 or 3 days wholly focussed upon the delivery of these units, and that all other requirements of the programme (i.e. Induction, Working Safely, Energy Efficiency, Customer Service, Smart Meter Communication Systems and Single Phase) are all covered explicitly outside the requirements of these categories
Assessment
There is a written and practical assessment for this scheme.
